Police Survey                                                                               14th October 2011

Norfolk Constabulary is seeking the public’s views to help shape the future of policing. This short survey (12 multiple-choice questions) asks participants to share their views on crime and policing issues, including whether they feel their local police are tackling the things that matter to them, how safe they feel in their local area and their perceptions of crime and ASB levels, and what they feel should be a priority for Norfolk’s police.

The responses we receive to the survey will be added to information gathered through the engagement and consultation activity we undertake throughout the year with Norfolk’s communities. Our Members use this information to help them to monitor and scrutinise key aspects of Norfolk Constabulary’s work, set policing priorities and make decisions about the police budget.

If you would like to share your views and help shape the way Norfolk is policed, please take the Police and Crime Survey at www.norfolk-pa.gov.uk/survey.cfm.

If you would prefer to complete a hard copy of the survey, these are available on request via 01953 424455 or policeauthority@norfolk.pnn.police.uk

Police coverage not affected by London riot support

                                                                                                                                   11th August 2011

Police are reassuring residents that it was a case of ‘business as usual’ overnight for police in Norfolk as the Constabulary continues to provide support to the Metropolitan Police in response to the civil unrest in London and other parts of the country.

The force has kept in place additional resources to ensure that they can deal with any local issues and to reassure communities and police would like to dispel fictitious and malicious rumours which are circulating, particularly on social networking sites about disorder on the streets of Norfolk.

Local officers are also reminding residents to be vigilant of cold callers following an incident in Brancaster.

Norfolk Constabulary offer the following advice to residents faced with cold callers:

  • ·         Close and lock the back door before answering the front door
  • ·         If the caller is selling something or offering work on your home, tell them you are not interested and ask them to leave.
  • ·         If they do not leave or you need assistance, then call 999.
  • ·         If the caller is valid, always ask for proof of identity. Phone the company or organisation the caller claims to be from while the caller waits outside.
  • ·         If necessary, report it to police with a description of the people involved and details of their vehicle if possible.

Police Apology     20th July 2011

Local police apologised to the Parish Council for failing to keep a promise.

While the A17 was being resurfaced causing a massive increase in traffic through the village PC Bernie Lee admitted he could see no reason why a promise of a police presence at school closing time to safeguard villagers had not been kept.

He encouraged parishioners to report such incidents and agreed to raise the concerns at all levels in the force.

Burglary warning     20th July 2011

Parishioners were warned of the dangers of leaving windows and doors unlocked - particularly at the rear of properties following a spate of burglaries where access has been gained through open windows and doors that are not secured.

Police are following leads regarding the break-ins which have taken place both at night and in broad daylight.

The warning was made that, regardless of the hot weather, when properties are left unattended windows (including small ones) must be securely locked.

Seasonal Warning 2                                                                   30th December 2010

Ring in the New Year with bells not burglars and ensure that this festive season your new Christmas gifts are not advertised to opportunistic thieves.

Keep your properties secure, especially overnight and don’t tempt offenders with packaging that shows exactly how lucky you have been with your gifts.

 Householders are reminded to:

Keep doors and windows closed and secure – even if the home is occupied – to deter ‘walk-in’ thieves.

  • Keep curtains closed and use timer switches to make your home look occupied.
  • Do not advertise all your Christmas goodies by leaving the empty boxes outside your home.
  • If you’re away for New Year, ask a neighbour or friend to keep and eye on your home.
  • If friends and family receive high-value gifts then they are urged to get them property marked with a UV pen stating the name, house number and postcode. This helps police identify the owner if the item is stolen.
  • UV pens, together with other crime prevention products, are available for sale from police Public Enquiry Offices and at www.norfolk.police.uk
  • Inspector Carol Congreve, Community Safety, adds:
  •  “If householders can bear in mind the advice we have given, they can help themselves to avoid falling victim to thieves during this festive period. Packaging for expensive electronic gifts advertises rich pickings for thieves and instead should be broken down and put inside the relevant bin or taken to a waste recycling/disposal site.”

Terrington Neighbourhood Priority                               24th November 2010

Reports of anti-social behaviour at a number of Marshland hot spots have fallen following concerted police and council action in recent weeks.

In the past two months, police have carried out regular high visibility and plain-clothes patrols in West Walton, Walsoken and Terrington St Clements, to identify and deal with incidents of anti-social behaviour.

Despite the traditionally busy Halloween and Bonfire Night periods, local youths have responded to requests to curb any nuisance behaviour and no enforcement action has needed to be taken.

At the most recent Safer Neighbourhood Action Panel meeting for the Terrington neighbourhood, the police and council agreed to retain these and speeding issues on rat-runs between the A17 and A47 as local priorities for the next two months.

The meeting was held at Terrington pavilion on Thursday November 18.

Terrington Safer Neighbourhood Team Sgt Sam Pontin said: “No new issues were raised by local residents or agencies at the SNAP meeting and, while we’re pleased the anti-social behaviour problems previously reported appear to have settled down, we intend to maintain our presence in these areas in the coming weeks.”

The meeting also heard that numerous roadside speed checks have been carried out by response and SNT officers on roads between the A47 and A17 linked to speeding vehicles and the breach of weight restrictions by HGVs. A total of 14 on-the-spot fines have been issued since the matter was adopted as a local priority in September, with each motorist accruing three points on their licence.

The team is continuing to work with Highways to look at the use of rumble strips and enforcement of the weight restriction on Church Road, Terrington St John.

Residents from across the area are encouraged to come along to the next SNAP meeting at Terrington St John Primary Schoolin

Church Road at 7pm on Thursday January 21.

To speak to a local officer in the mean time call Terrington SNT on 0845 456 4567 or for council services, contact the Borough Council on 01553 616200.

Check Callers First!                                                                       12th August 2010

Norfolk Constabulary and Anglian Water are working in partnership to crackdown on bogus water officials.

As part of a national initiative by the UK Water Industry, concerned residents can now call a helpline number and verify the identity of the person calling at their home.

By encouraging the public to call the helpline, the Operation Radar team and Anglian Water aim to safeguard people in their homes and reduce the risk of distraction burglary offences.

DS Pete Jessop said;  “In the past year there have been 16 incidents in Norfolk involving callers claiming to be from the water board and stating their need to enter the property. The phone number can be used to verify the authenticity of officials and minimise the risk of a crime occurring.”

“If a cold caller visits your home claiming they need to enter the property urgently then be cautious. There are very few circumstances where someone would need to be given access in this manner. Check the identity of the caller and make them wait – if they’re genuine they will not mind.”

Martyn Oakley, Customer Services Director at Anglian Water said:  “We, at Anglian Water, take the protection of our customers very seriously.  All our staff and contractors carry identification and we have a dedicated phone line for customers to confirm the identity and seek reassurance that any visitor is genuine.

If a customer receives an unexpected doorstep visitor we urge them to check their ID and then call the company to make sure they are who they say they are. All of our employees and contractors will be happy to wait while you do this.”

Consumers are advised to call 0800 145145 to check the identity of a 'water company' doorstep caller.

ENSURING A POLICE PRESENCE WHERE YOU LIVE                       27 July 2010

Norfolk Constabulary has announced the launch of new contact services for the public to help keep them keep in regular touch with their Safer Neighbourhood Teams.

Norfolk Constabulary has been considering how to increase officer visibility across the county as part of the ongoing effort to improve accessibility whilst driving down costs.

It follows a review of how the public accessed police which revealed inefficiencies that, in the current financial climate, could not be ignored.

As a consequence the information points in Post Offices are being withdrawn and the old mobile police stations have been replaced with SNT cars and, in some cases, officers will be travelling on mobile library vans.

Parish Councils along with parish and community magazine editors are being encouraged to ask their residents to sign up to Norfolk Constabulary’s new community messaging system, Police Direct.

The service will deliver information about how residents can meet their local Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) members and participate in the local priority setting process.

Registration is easy. Simply log onto www.norfolk.police.uk

Subscribers can receive information in a format of their choosing. Ideally (and most cost-effective of all) this will be via email but all other forms of contact are also available, including telephone voice messages and texts.

Our website – www.norfolk.police.uk – has the most comprehensive information about how to contact police either centrally or through each individual SNT along with information about who makes up each SNT and what the current local priorities and actions are.

Residents can also request a visit from a member of their local Safer Neighbourhood Team at a convenient time – either by telephoning 0845 456 4567 or through the website – www.norfolk.police.uk

There are also many ways in which residents can contact the police:

    • Log onto the website www.norfolk.police.uk
    • Call 0845 456 4567
    • Text 07786 200777
    • Sign up to Police Direct via www.norfolk.police.uk or fill in a form at your nearest Public Enquiry Office. Messages by email, text voice message and fax.
    • Speak to your local Safer Neighbourhood Team member on the beat
    • Attend a Safer Neighbourhood Team meeting – details published on community message boards and via Police Direct
    • Call 0845 456 4567 and request a visit from your Safer Neighbourhood Team at a mutally agreed time, date and location (or that suits you)
    • Visit your nearest Public Enquiry Office. View their locations at www.norfolk.police.uk
